1 . Ethical Theory and Bioethics
نویسنده
چکیده
The moral problems discussed in this book have emerged from professional practice in the fields of clinical medicine, biomedical research, nursing, public health, and the social and behavioral sciences. The goal of this first chapter is to provide a basis in language, norms, and theory sufficient for reading and criticizing the selections in the later chapters. Everyone is aware that ethics in the biomedical professions has had a distinguished history. Among the most influential sources of medical and nursing ethics are its traditions: the concepts, practices, and norms that have long guided conduct in these fields. The history and precise character of these traditions may be the logical starting point in reflecting on professional ethics, but great traditions such as Hippocratic ethics often fail to provide a comprehensive, unbiased, and adequately justified ethics. Indeed, the history of medical ethics over the last two thousand years is a particularly disappointing history from the perspective of today's concerns in bioethics about the rights of patients and research subjects. Prior to the early 1970s, there was no firm ground in which a commitment to principles outside of Hippocratic medical ethics could take root and flourish. Particular ethical codes written for the medical, nursing, and research professions had always been written by their own members to govern their own conduct. To consult persons outside the profession was thought not only unnecessary, but dangerous. This conception has collapsed in the face of the pressures of the modern world. Such a professional morality has been judged not adequately comprehensive, coherent, or sensitive to conflicts of interest. The birth of bioethics occurred as a result of an increasing awareness that this older ethic had become obsolete. FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEMS

The Uses and Abuses of Moral Theory in Bioethics
Moral theory is an important guide to bioethical decision-making, but it can confuse and mislead those who offer ethical advice to clinicians and researchers, delaying decisions that must be made in a timely fashion. In this paper I examine the ways moral theory can lead bioethicists astray. Absent a sensitivity to the empirical realities of ethical problems, moral theory 1) contributes to the ...
متن کاملSymbiotic empirical ethics: a practical methodology.
Like any discipline, bioethics is a developing field of academic inquiry; and recent trends in scholarship have been towards more engagement with empirical research. This 'empirical turn' has provoked extensive debate over how such 'descriptive' research carried out in the social sciences contributes to the distinctively normative aspect of bioethics. This paper will address this issue by devel...
متن کاملApplication of Ethical Theories to Human Genome Sequencing
We apply a number of ethical theories to ethical concerns an issues arising from the technical ability and practice of performing DNA and human genome sequencing. We identify the scientific facts of DNA and genome sequencing and the related ethical concerns. Subsequently, we attempt to apply relevant ethical theories to these concerns and issues. The ethically issues discussed include privacy, ...
متن کاملWhat makes a problem an ethical problem? An empirical perspective on the nature of ethical problems in general practice.
Whilst there has been considerable debate about the fit between moral theory and moral reasoning in everyday life, the way in which moral problems are defined has rarely been questioned. This paper presents a qualitative analysis of interviews conducted with 15 general practitioners (GPs) in South Australia to argue that the way in which the bioethics literature defines an ethical dilemma captu...
متن کامل[From virtue bioethics to bioethics personalistic: is integration possible?].
In this article we analyze how the idea of virtue as an important element of human ethical action is slowly being lost. There are proposals both in ethics and in bioethics to rehabilitate virtue and to consider it as a very important element of human morality. In particular, in the health sector the rehabilitation of virtue, would imply greater focus on the ethical character of professionals an...
متن کاملTheoretical resources for a globalised bioethics.
In an age of global capitalism, pandemics, far-flung biobanks, multinational drug trials and telemedicine it is impossible for bioethicists to ignore the global dimensions of their field. However, if they are to do good work on the issues that globalisation requires of them, they need theoretical resources that are up to the task. This paper identifies four distinct understandings of 'globalise...
